Horoscope and astrological planetary aspects of the Libya Jet Crash, Flight 8U-771, in Tripoli, 2010
For the Libyan jets that defected to Malta during the Libya Blood Rivers Revolution, please see this article on 21 February 2011: Libya Blood Rivers Revolution #1
Below are the preliminary horoscope charts for the Libya plane crash, flight Afriqiyah 8U-771, which occurred between 04h00m and 04h10m (UT) at Tripoli Airport (Libyan Arab Jamahirya) on 12 May 2010, coordinates 32°54'N and 13°11'W. Here is a pdf of the airport layout. The plane crashed upon landing and exploded in millions of fragments. There is one survivor, a child, and 103 dead. All the information I have managed to gather is below and will be completed as and when more details become available. The passenger list has been published (if that link does not work in the future, try this one where I have copied the list. NUPDATE: In an article published in the very serious Wall Street Journal, sources say that there was nothing wrong with the plane, that the Co-Pilot was flying, and that both became disoriented in the approach... Whenever I see an official report, I'll post the link here. |
The astrology aspects occur during a generally difficult planetary period, with Mercury stationary going direct on the same day. In the general atmosphere of this month, a rather catastrophic list of aspects between Saturn take place. These are: opposition Uranus and Jupiter, quincunx Moon, Neptune, and Chiron, two Mars-Uranus and Mars-Pluto sesquisquare. In the helio chart, one notes the on-going applying Saturn-Pluto square, an applying Mars Neptune quincunx and Mars Uranus opposition. The astrological analysis will be completed a little later, when details of the airplane crash are better known. The picture on the right is reproduced with the permission of the photographer, pilot Chris Smith, at airliners.net (click for large photo), and was taken on the day after delivery to Libya, on 9 September 2009. |
At any rate, the first half of this year is just not good for anything related to aircrafts and the airplane and travel industries. The astrology charts below are provisional until more details are known, so they may change in the next few days. Please take account of this before downloading.

Facts on the Libya plane crash
It is not clear whether the jet exploded on crashing, or whether it exploded before crashing. The plane was landing West to East in the rising sun amidst reduced visibility owing to a sand haze. It remains to be confirmed whether the jet was brought down when in the earth's shadow just before this sun rise. The photographs on the scene of this crash show mostly very small pieces, which would either confirm a high vertical velocity - if the plane exploded on impact - or a very unusual attitude. It may be that the pilots suffered from spatial disorientation plus the haze plus the sun glare (whiteout). References are here: (1) FAA; (2) Air Safety Foundation; (3) Wikipedia.
Here are the records of the previous crashes in Tripoli, kept by Aviation Safety Network:
1989 - ASN Aircraft accident McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 HL7328 Tripoli
1971 - ASN Aircraft accident de Havilland DH-106 Comet 4C SU-ALC Tripoli International Airport (TIP)
1970 - ASN Aircraft accident Tupolev 104A OK-NDD Tripoli
The aircraft was en route from Johannesburg in South Africa to Tripoli (Libya) and, according to this news source, it departed on 11 May 2010 at 19h37m UT. Many passengers had onward bookings for European destinations. Among them there were 62 Dutch people, a group of 38 who had gone on holidays from Düsseldof (Germany), and another of 24 from Brussels (Belgium). There is one 8 year-old Dutch child who survived; all other 103 passengers and crew, out of 104, have perished.
Facts on the plane and Afriqiyah Airways
First Flight or Maiden Flight of 5A-ONG - Geocentric and heliocentric charts
According to Aviation-Safety.net, its first (maiden) flight was on 12 August 2009 (in Toulouse, France). However, on Airliners.Net, there is a photograph of this plane on 29 May 2009. Officially, according to this official database, Airfleets.net, her maiden flight was definitely on 12 August 2009. Unfortunately, I have no time and no location, though I suspect it took place in Toulouse (France). As in the case of the AF447 plane, I have decided to draw the charts for 12 noon. The first reason is that it's tradition, the second reason is that as a commercial plane, the time of 12 noon would put the Sun somewhere near the Midheaven, in IX, X or XIth houses, which is appropriate for a commercial plane. That said, the angles and the Moon could be well off, so interpretation of the charts need to concentrate on the other points. Click on the charts below to view them in a large window.
On the geocentric side, it's immediately apparent that something will go wrong with this plane. Mars is exactly square Saturn, so tragedy would strike it at some point. |
Although Mars, in Gemini in IX, is applying to the trine of the treble conjunction of Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron in Aquarius, it's also, at the same time, applying to a square to Uranus in Pisces in the VIth. So this is a plane that looks good, full of energy (Mars), famous (Jupiter), which represents ideals (Neptune), it's also unstable and untidy in its movements (Gemini), prone to "nerves" (square to Uranus - electric problems?), with precipitation in action (going too fast, or reacting too fast). Ten degrees later, Mars will come to the opposition of Pluto (this plane crashed 10 months after its maiden flight).
The astrology chart is also full of minor aspects (not shown because it clutters the drawing). There are numerous quincunxes showing hesitation or lack of proper direction. Mercury is parallel Saturn at the same time as both are widely conjunct, in Virgo. So dignified Mercury holds dominion over Saturn and over Mars and Sappho. This certainly means the crews piloting this particular plane would generally be suitably qualified and old enough to make appropriate decisions.
Since it does not look like there is a "factory" defect in the plane, any future mishap would have to be provoked by other planets than Saturn or Mercury. This could happen with only two possibilities,
- (1) exterior factors; or
- (2) factors involving the crew without it being their fault.
There's also a strange combination of fixed stars over Mercury, Sappho and Saturn, and the opposition to Uranus: Avior (Epsilon (ε) Carina in Argo Navis) and Delta Velorum (the sails in that same constellation). In a way, one could almost read the "sails" as the "wings" of this (air) ship. Anne Wright, in the articles on these stars, quoting Manilius and others, says that this can also mean "sign, flag", which would be appropriate to this plane, as it was one of the flagships of the fleet. Libya was a very active partner of the African Union and had painted its birth date on the fin of the planes (the most visible sign/flag). And the wings have been clipped (Mars) from air to earth (Saturn: earth, Mercury: earth and air). As for the whole constellation of the Argos Navis. I'll quote this author, but I strongly suggest you read the three articles in those links.
"Whoever is born on earth at the rising of Argo will be the captain of a ship; holding fast to his helm, he will forsake dry land for the sea and pursue his fortune with the winds; he will crave to traverse the entire ocean with his fleet, visit foreign climes and the deep Phasis, and better the speed of Tiphys towards the rocks (the Symplegades)....The Libyan Afriqia Airways company was founded with the aim of beating low-cost airlines at their own game, at the same time as reinstating the Libya as an African influence of importance. Mercury and Saturn in Virgo are the epitome of "low cost". Looks like Saturn cut short this aim and Mars punctured a big balloon.
As for heliocentric aspects, if anything, they are worse and possibly the final clue to the end of this plane. Sappho, conjunct to Saturn, is opposite Uranus, and it's exact within a day. Sedna is opposed Mercury. Fixed star Avior is exactly conjunct Saturn. Mercury, just past a square to Earth, applies to the square of Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron.
The whole configuration makes a tremendously powerful T-square, which is not balanced by much good, since the same quadruple conjunction is also quincunx Saturn. It also forms two mystical triangles if one counts Ceres in the configurations (square + quincunx + trine). These minor planets really ought to be the subject of some in-depth research. Venus and Mars are attacked by Pluto, there's a Yod with Eris at the apex and Mercury and Saturn on the other sides. In the parallels of declination, between some very tight orbs and some less so, there's Earth, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Juno and Vesta contacting each other. Too fast (Mars), too untidy (Uranus), too confident (Jupiter), too technical (Uranus), too much in a hurry to get home (Juno and Vesta), all meeting Earth... Not much good all that!
Plane delivery to Afriqiya Airways - Geocentric and heliocentric astrology charts
The possible confusion on dates exists for the delivery of the plane, with one photo on 8 September 2009 and another on the day after. It's symbolically important when that plane was delivered, as it bears the livery of the date of the birth of the African Union, on 9 September 1999. The plane, an Airbus A330, was supposed to have been delivered on the 10th commemoration of this important date. In fact, the aircraft was delivered in Tripoli Airport on 8 September 2009 and it was expected to land at about 16h00 local time (GMT +2). I have been unable to find a more accurate time than that. The charts for the jet's arrival are below, click on them to see the big screen charts.
The chart, from the point of view of major aspects is "average bad" because of the heavies, but the lighter planets are not much in emphasis in a bad way. However, the minor aspects are numerous and support my theory that such an abundance is probably not a good thing. At any rate, that new plane does not look like it suffered from any major technical fault - this would involve Mercury, Mars and Saturn, but it is not the case, particularly as Mercury and Saturn are in mutual reception. Note that if the time of landing is about right, we have some fixed stars on the ASC/DSC axis, Vega and Sirius, respectively, with Miaplacidus on the MC, but they are fortunate here. Perhaps this is what helped the little boy who survived.
The annoying little asteroids are playing up as well with Sappho opposed to Uranus, Juno smack on top of the cusp of III and square Pluto, Lilith conjunct the North Node Rahu.
The declinational aspects are few but interesting: Moon parallel Venus, and both contraparallel Pluto and Jupiter. Something big, emotional, destructive, and costing a lot of money. It certainly is the case that the plane was beautifully decorated (Venus), awakened emotions (African Unity symbol), political power (Pluto and Jupiter, perhaps not in the best way). Mars is almost out of bounds in Cancer, the child - Cancer/Moon) was thrown out (Mars "Out)? And one finds again a minor planet, Sappho, parallel Uranus.
On the heliocentric chart, the Saturn opposition to Uranus was exact the day before, Earth is applying by 9° to Uranus (9 months left to live???), Saturn is quincunx both Jupiter and Neptune. There's pesky little Juno which is conjunct to Uranus (see my remarks about these minor planets in the previous posts. They always seem to show up somewhere significant in disasters). Venus and Mars are on critical degrees and connecting to Pluto. Jupiter and Uranus are parallel in the latitudes, with Venus contraparallel them both. Pluto and Sappho are contraparallel.
So, from the above chart, one could have said, in anticipation, that there would be some problems with this plane. Whether one could have predicted the crash is perhaps best seen in conjunction with the other charts concerning this accident.

Afriqiyah Airways was founded in April 2001 and reorganised in 2007; it is owned by the Libyan Government. It started scheduled services on 1st December 2001. It has Airbus planes only. The average age of the fleet is 5 years.
Was the Icelandic volcanic ash to blame?
It is not known either if the volcanic ash plume from Iceland played a role or not. The volcano dust maps for yesterday and today did indicate that North Africa was at risk of volcanic ashes. I have dug out the ash maps from London VAAG from my computer but these do not show any significant amount of volcanic ash near Libya. After a second look at my sources, I cannot find a trace of volcanic ashes around Tripoli for that date and time.
I have other satellite photographs which show sand dust which would explain the haze described in the news articles, but these are usual conditions for this time of the year. Here is a satellite picture of sand over Eastern Libya, I did not find one for Western Libya where Tripoli is situated.
Astrology Horoscope Geocentric and heliocentric charts of the plane crash
I have set the chart for 04h05 GMT (06h05 local) because the time is not yet known with accuracy. Reading the article on the Internet makes me think it might have happened before sunrise, a few minutes before 04h00.
There was an Alitalia plane, flight AZ871, waiting for take-off and the crew saw the crash. According to the links provided, this Italian aircraft departed at 05h50 local (03h50 GMT). There were also planes waiting to land behind it, of which one of them also saw the tragedy. You might need to register with this site to see the full history of the landings and taking-offs of the planes (it's free, and there's no virus or spam associated with this site, I checked).
When examining disaster, one tends to look at the heavy planets first, but in this chart, you also need to look at innocuous "inferior" planets and remember they were both considered major in the Babylonian times and were supposed to wreak terrible events when badly placed in the sky. I think that's what happened here, these two were major contributors. Not only was the sun rising, or just before or just after, which may have caused temporary blindness with the pilots (even though Pleiades is not emphasised), but Moon was becoming a New Moon, and Mercury would have been visible in the sky with naked eyes, if the mist or desert sand dust was not too strong. And at the time of the crash, Jupiter also would have been very visible if there had not been any fog.
This question of weather at the time of the crash is a vexing one, because METARS (the meteorological maps for aircrafts) mentioned good, hazy with diminishing visibility by the minute. So, depending on the exact time of the crash, the crew either had extremely good, or very bad, weather. For 0400Z (i.e. GMT) as is the time declared by the authorities, Mars was exactly square the ASC, angular in the IVth and ruler of the Moon. The descent would have been too fast and the reaction of the crew to rectify the situation would also have been (emotional - Moon) too fast (Mars). Saturn and Uranus are opposed almost exactly, while Uranus is in a critical degree.
The role played by ATC (air traffic controllers) would be shown by Mercury and, possibly, by Saturn (control). Strongly malefic Mercury rules Saturn in Virgo in the Vth, which house may be partly ruled by a rising Sun (depending on the time). Looks like some rumors on some pilots' forum are not too far from the astrological truth. ATC would have been debilitated with these planets. With respect to technical difficulties with the plane itself, one should look again at Mercury, and possibly Uranus. There's a sesquisquare between Uranus and Mars, no relation between Mercury and Uranus, Uranus is opposite Saturn and is ruled by strongly benefic Jupiter. A technical defect of the plane looks like it can be ruled out. However, the planets are not that strong and it maybe that the attempts to correct the plane's course may have surprised the pilots or the plane's reaction to commands was unexpected to the crew.
The placement of Pluto is ambiguous. It has a number of rather bad minor aspects with rather unpleasant minor planets, and a good trine to Mercury. In Capricorn in VIIIth it's ruled by a debilitated Saturn and secondarily by a rogue and strong Mars. This would to some extent explain the fragmentation of the plane into millions of unrecognizable pieces, save the tail fin and parts of the wheels and wings. Thinking aloud... fragmentation as in... as some people may have thought. The authorities were quite prompt to dismiss such a possibility and frankly, the chart is not that bad that it would indicate third parties tampering with this plane. This is despite the contraparallel of declination between Sun and Pluto.
There is a possibility that Neptune throws a mantle of illusion and deception with respect to what really happened, but this should not last long (Sun in XIIth). In this particular chart, it does look like the authorities are going to be very keen to demonstrate what happened, perhaps after some initial resistance from some quarters. This is because Neptune has very few links to the XIIth of hidden processes, also because Jupiter which is very benefic in this chart rules the VIIIth of death and secrecy. Finally, Pluto is slave to Saturn in Virgo, Saturn ruling the IXth, and it will demand the truth (which will come from abroad - IXth) at any cost (Mercury-Saturn-Virgo links). Besides, Mercury and Lilith in contraparallel will make it so that speculations will need to be quashed if this airline is to recover.
Turning to the heliocentric chart, see that Venus in Leo is strongly angular in IVth, if one take account of the angles in heliocentric astrology, and it also rules the ASC. There's something of a theme repeated there, haste to get home, and a child (Leo) who survives. It's exactly quincunx Pluto in Capricorn within minutes during the flight and that is telling. Something big, powerful, nasty, destroyed (Pluto) the beauty of home (Venus). It struck its belly first (Venus IVth).
